(ESPN High School Report) ROCKWALL – Highland Park defensive back Mark Gottsacker knew things would be OK, even after Rockwall-Heath receiver Amaris Fields burned him for a score a 43-yard, game-tying touchdown near the end of the fourth quarter and drew a taunting penalty by waving a finger in Gottsacker’s face.

With just over a minute left in the game, Fields again found himself open downfield, but this time the ball bounced off his arms and into the hands of Gottsacker.

“Karma comes back to bite you,” Gottsacker said. “The next one hit him right in hands and it tipped out right into my lap.”

(Dallas Morning News) ROCKWALL — If defense truly wins championships, than Rockwall-Heath is in great shape. The Hawks’ defensive unit forced five interceptions and one fumble Friday night, helping Heath stay undefeated with a 21-13 victory over rival Rockwall at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium.

With Heath trailing 10-7 early in the third quarter of the 10-4A matchup, Justin Peters and Seth Nunnally took matters into their own hands. In less than a minute of play, they intercepted bad passes from Rockwall quarterback Wesley Davis and returned both for scores.

Considering that Heath (7-0, 4-0) was doing virtually nothing on offense after an early seven-play scoring drive, it was critical for the defense to come up with six turnovers.

By J.J. Smith. Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath High Schools won’t be playing Royse City, Greenville, Carrollton R.L. Turner or Carrollton Newman Smith High schools in District 10-4A  for the next year in some sports and two years in football after the UIL replaced those schools Monday with Wylie, Wylie East, McKinney and McKinney North for 2010-2012.

District 10-4A now includes Rockwall, Rockwall-Heath, Highland Park, Richardson J.J. Pearce, Wylie, Wylie East, McKinney and McKinney North High Schools.

Royse City and Greenville have been moved to the far-reaching District 13-4A, which means they’ll be traveling all over Northeast Texas to play Texarkana, Sulphur Springs, Mt. Pleasant, Sherman and Dennison.

The Carrollton schools have been placed in District 9-4A, which includes Carrollton Creekview and five Frisco high schools.

There were plenty of mixed feeling about the reshuffling, especially in Royse City.

Royse City football coach Greg Strahm half-jokingly said he’s been contacting all the local businesses to get as many frequent flyer miles as possible for his team.

“It will put a strain on the travel budget, but I’m sure the administration will be very understanding about it.”

“It’s not a scenario I would have ever imagined, but I never would have predicted that Royse City would have had to go all the way to Carrollton for the last two years either.”

“But it’s the way it is now and we’re going to make it work.”

“You can never figure out what the UIL is going to do. There’s been a lot of talk about going east. The “Beast from the East” is very comparable in football with Sherman, Dennison and Sulphur Springs.”

He added that Royse City was able to schedule a non-district week two game with Rockwall, “which should be good for the rivalry,” but they weren’t able to schedule a game with Rockwall-Heath and will try again next year.”

Rockwall High School athletic director and football coach Scott Smith said he thought the reshuffling was exciting.

“It’s exciting to see what will happen every two years. You never know what the UIL will do.”

“It is what it is.”

He said he was glad they could schedule the game with Royse City.

Rockwall-Heath football coach Mickey Moss added that he’s looking forward to the new district, now that it’s been realigned.

“I am looking forward to the new district. I think the district will be more competitive across the board in all sports.”

“I am also disappointed that we are losing Royce City and wish that it would have worked out to play them in football in non-district but we could not get it matched up due to prior commitments.”

McKinney North football coach Mike Fecci said he couldn’t figure out why the Bulldogs and intra-city rival McKinney Lions were moved to District 10-4A. He said he was content in District 9 with the Frisco ISD schools due to familiarity and ease of travel.

“I was pretty shocked by that,” said Fecci, adding that he had no idea why the UIL switched things up. “There’s no rhyme or reason to it. We can’t control it so we play with the hand we’re dealt and try to make the best of it.”

By J.J. Smith. Scoring touchdowns on its first six possessions, Rockwall-Heath scored more points in the first half against I-30 Cross-town Classic rival Rockwall than it has in any complete game this season, and the 13th-ranked Hawks clobbered the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets 55-38 last night at Wilkerson-Sanders stadium, winning the inaugural Congressman Ralph Hall trophy.

Behind the rushing of junior running back Dorian Lawry, who rushed 24 times for 227 yards and five TDs, including 29 and 44-yard runs, Heath (4-1, 2-0) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and led 21-0 before Rockwall finally scored its first TD.

Heath’s offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage all night. It also protected senior quarterback Kevin Rodgers so well that he was able to complete 13 of 16 passes for 233 yards and three TDs, including long strikes to Tyler Harding for 25 yards, Cameron Wilson for 38 yards and Ryan Peterson for 48 yards.

The Hawks only real mistakes were penalties which hampered them during the second half. They had seven total penalties for 50 yards.

The Yellow Jackets offense had a pretty good night of their own, rolling up 443 yards of total offense, behind Josh Broach’s 24 carries for 121 yards and three TDs, including a 35-yard run and 29-yard pass play from San Dieto State recruit QB Adam Dingwell.

Dingwell completed 14 of 21 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns, including an exciting 69-yard pass play to Will Beasley to end the scoring for the night.Â

But the Yellow Jackets defense had a very difficult time all night, giving up 550 yards of total offense to the Hawks.

The game began well for them, when they stuffed running back Jesse Irokwe with a one-yard loss, but four plays later Heath scored its first TD on Lawry’s 12-yard run and it went downhill from there.

Harding then hauled in his 29-yard pass from Rodgers and Lawry added his 29-yard TD run. Then Broach scored Rockwall’s first TD on an exciting 35-yard run, but Heath already led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hawks scored three more TDs, when Wilson and Peterson scored on their long pass plays and Lawry added his third TD on a seven-yard run. Broach scored twice for the Yellow Jackets, but the score was 41-21 at the half.

In the second half, Rockwall actually outscored the Hawks, 17-14, but it just wasn’t enough. Yellow Jacket kicker Ted Gates kicked a 29-yard field goal to open the scoring. But the Hawks answered with Lawry’s seven-yard TD run.

Rockwall’s Del Myles electrified the crowd to begin the fourth quarter scoring with a 56-yard run, injecting some hope in the Rockwall crowd. But now behind 48-32, Lawry ran 44 yards for his and the Hawks last score to take the wind out of the Yellow Jackets’ faint hopes.Â

Rockwall’s last score came on Beasley’s 69-yard pass from Dingwell.Â

Heath has now won four straight games after a season opening loss to a tough 4-1 Sherman, and appears to be ready to defend its District 10-4A championship crown.

If Rockwall’s defense can toughen up, the Yellow Jackets still stand a good chance of either yet winning the District crown or at least making the playoffs. Only four teams will make the cut, however, and besides the Hawks, at least three other 10-4A teams appear capable this year of making it into the post-season.

Pre-season favorite Highland Park (4-1, 2-0)) continued their winning ways last night, blasting Greenville (3-2, 0-2), 59-12; Carrollton’s Newman Smith (3-2, 1-1)Â crushed Turner (0-5, 0-2), 48-6; and J.J. Pearce (4-1, 2-0)Â beat up rebuilding Royse City (0-5, 0-2), 55-14 in Richardson.

Rockwall will continue District play Thursday night, 7:30 pm, against Turner in Carrollton’s Standridge Stadium.

Friday night Rockwall-Heath will play Newman Smith at Standridge, also at 7:30 pm.

Royse City will seek their first victory when they play at home against Greenville Friday night at 7:30 pm.
