As a result, the Area’s 8th-ranked Mustangs (5-2, 3-1) held on to defeat disappointed Rockwall (4-3, 2-2) in a wild offensive show last night at Rockwall’s Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium, 43-36.

Although the Yellow Jackets amassed 562 yards total offense, the Mustangs were able to convert more of their 531 yards total offense into points.

Rockwall’s Adam Dingwell completed 22 of 36 passes to six receivers for 314 yards and one TD, Will Beasley’s caught six passes for 139 yards and one TD, plus Josh Broach carried 33 times for 178 yards, caught four passes for 22 yards and scored two TDs.

Luke Wardell also caught five passes for 81 yards and Scott Loy four for 52 yards.

Mustang quarterback Caleb Lewis was almost perfect, completing 29 of 32 passes for 369 yards and two touchdowns to six receivers. Jake Allen caught nine passes for 102 yards and Pearce’s first touchdown. Mustang Josh Gold rushed 15 times for 119 yards and caught six passes for 76 yards, scoring four TDs.

Pearce took the early lead on a 20-yard pass to Allen from Lewis, but Broach’s three-yard run tied the score. Gold came back to score on an eight-yard run to give the Mustangs a 14-7 first-quarter lead.

In the second quarter, Pearce scored again on a short burst by Gold and a 36-yard pass from Lewis to Blake Jumonville. But Rockwall blocked the first PAT kick and the two-point conversion failed.

Rockwall also scored twice on a Broach 12-yard run, a Del Myles seven-yard run, plus a one-point PAT kick by Ted Shinn and two-point conversion pass to Reed Loftis from Dingwell. 

The Mustangs then held a 26-22 lead.

In the third quarter, the only score was a 41-yard field goal by Pearce’s Michael Hunnicut, increasing their lead to 29-22.

But in the fourth quarter both offenses again came alive, scoring 14 points each.

Pearce scored on two nine and four yards.   

Rockwall scored with Myles second TD run of 10 yards. He rushed 87 yard on 11 carries. Beasley scored the final TD on a 19 yard pass from Dingwell.

Scoring touchdowns on its first six possessions, Rockwall-Heath scored more points in the first half against I-30 Cross-town Classic rival Rockwall than it has in any complete game this season, and the 13th-ranked Hawks clobbered the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets 55-38 last night at Wilkerson-Sanders stadium, winning the inaugural Congressman Ralph Hall trophy.

Behind the rushing of junior running back Dorian Lawry, who rushed 24 times for 227 yards and five TDs, including 29 and 44-yard runs, Heath (4-1, 2-0) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and led 21-0 before Rockwall finally scored its first TD.

Heath’s offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage all night. It also protected senior quarterback Kevin Rodgers so well that he was able to complete 13 of 16 passes for 233 yards and three TDs, including long strikes to Tyler Harding for 25 yards, Cameron Wilson for 38 yards and Ryan Peterson for 48 yards.

The Hawks only real mistakes were penalties which hampered them during the second half. They had seven total penalties for 50 yards.

The Yellow Jackets offense had a pretty good night of their own, rolling up 443 yards of total offense, behind Josh Broach’s 24 carries for 121 yards and three TDs, including a 35-yard run and 29-yard pass play from San Dieto State recruit QB Adam Dingwell.

Dingwell completed 14 of 21 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns, including an exciting 69-yard pass play to Will Beasley to end the scoring for the night. 

But the Yellow Jackets defense had a very difficult time all night, giving up 550 yards of total offense to the Hawks.

The game began well for them, when they stuffed running back Jesse Irokwe with a one-yard loss, but four plays later Heath scored its first TD on Lawry’s 12-yard run and it went downhill from there.

Harding then hauled in his 29-yard pass from Rodgers and Lawry added his 29-yard TD run. Then Broach scored Rockwall’s first TD on an exciting 35-yard run, but Heath already led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hawks scored three more TDs, when Wilson and Peterson scored on their long pass plays and Lawry added his third TD on a seven-yard run. Broach scored twice for the Yellow Jackets, but the score was 41-21 at the half.

In  the second half, Rockwall actually outscored the Hawks, 17-14,  but it just wasn’t enough. Yellow Jacket kicker Ted Gates kicked a 29-yard field goal to open the scoring. But the Hawks answered with Lawry’s seven-yard TD run.

Rockwall’s Del Myles electrified the crowd to begin the fourth quarter scoring with a 56-yard run, injecting some hope in the Rockwall crowd. But now behind 48-32, Lawry ran 44 yards for his and the Hawks last score to take the wind out of the Yellow Jackets’ faint hopes. 

Rockwall’s last score came on Beasley’s 69-yard pass from Dingwell. 

Heath has now won four straight games after a season opening loss to a tough 4-1 Sherman, and appears to be ready to defend its District 10-4A championship crown.

If Rockwall’s defense can toughen up, the Yellow Jackets still stand a good chance of either yet winning the District crown or at least making the playoffs. Only four teams will make the cut, however, and besides the Hawks, at least three other 10-4A teams appear capable this year of making it into the post-season.

Pre-season favorite Highland Park (4-1, 2-0)) continued their winning ways last night, blasting Greenville (3-2, 0-2), 59-12; Carrollton’s Newman Smith (3-2, 1-1) crushed Turner (0-5, 0-2), 48-6; and J.J. Pearce (4-1, 2-0)  beat up rebuilding Royse City (0-5, 0-2), 55-14 in Richardson.

Rockwall will continue District play Thursday night, 7:30 pm, against Turner in Carrollton’s Standridge Stadium.

Friday night Rockwall-Heath will play Newman Smith at Standridge, also at 7:30 pm.

Royse City will seek their first victory when they play at home against Greenville Friday night at 7:30 pm.

Broach scored on runs of 5, 53 and 53 yards.

All totaled, the Yellow Jackets (3-1) rushed for 364 yards, including a 13-yard scoring run by quarterback Adam Dingwell.

Royse City (0-4) scored in the first quarter when Kristopher Smith caught a 28-yard pass from Taylor Corbin but the Bulldogs didn’t score again until late in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run by Lewis Mapps and Corbin’s 1-yard run.

In other District 10-4A games, Rockwall-Heath ran past Greenville, 38-12; Highland Park rolled over Carrollton Newman Smith, 56-35; and Richardson Pearce destroyed Carrollton R.L. Turner, 75-25.

Next Friday, Rockwall will play Rockwall-Heath in their huge cross-town rivalry game at Wilkerson Sanders Stadium at 7:30 pm.

Royse City will travel to play at Richardson Pearce Friday night at 7:30 pm.

Down 28-24, after Rowlett had scored its final TD with 9:45 remaining on a 12-yard run by Eagle running back Treyvon Green, Rockwall (2-0) drove down the field, featuring a 33-yard pass from Adam Dingwell to Will Beasley. 

Then after Rowlett was charged with a pass interference penalty, for tackling Beasley in the end zone before the pass arrived, referees placed the ball on Rowlett’s five-yard line. The 5’9″, 185-pound Broach took it in from there in one play, capping a 129-yard rushing night. He now has scored seven TDs in his first two games.

It didn’t take long for Rockwall to score its first touchdown in their newly-refubished home, which seats 10,000 fans. The Yellow Jackets scored on their opening drive just four and a half minutes into the game on a perfect 10-yard Adam Dingwell pass to Scott Loy in the back of the end zone over the outstretched arms of a defender. 

Rowlett countered with their first touchdown and extra point kick tying the score at the end of the first quarter, 7-7.

In the second quarter, Broach scored his first TD on a five-yard off-tackle slant. Kicker Travis Shinn also nailed a 33-yard field goal and the Yellow Jackets took a 17-14 lead into halftime, after Rowlett scored late in the quarter on a two-yard run.

On the second play of the second half, Rowlett took the lead for the first time, when a Rockwall defender missed going for an interception on a down and out pattern and Rowlett receiver Joshua Powell caught the pass and ran 67 yards down the sideline for the go-ahead TD, putting Rowlett up 21-17.

Rockwall responded on their next series with a 85-yard TD drive, capped by a Broach one-yard plunge, taking a 24-21 lead.

Rockwall outgained Rowlett, 431 yards to 366 yards of total offense.  Rowlett gained 192 yards rushing to 166 for the Yellow Jackets.

Besides Broach’s running, Dingwell carried 11 times for 37 yards. The San Diego State recruit also passed for 265 yards on 18 of 27 completions, with one TD.

Beasley and Loy each snagged seven catches, for 132 and 87 yards respectively. Luke Wardell also caught two passes for 23 yards. Reed Loftis and Broach each caught one pass.

Rockwall travels Sept. 11 to play at defending 5A state champion Allen (1-1), which last night beat Monterrey Tec (Mex.), 35-21. Allen lost their opening game ata Longview, 28-25.  

In non-conference action involving other District 10-4A teams, Rockwall-Heath lost its season opener to Sherman, 40-31, Highland Park romped over Frisco Liberty, 42-14, and Richardson Pearce lost to Denton Ryan, 64-36.

Junior running back Josh Broach ran over Midland newly-installed 4-3 defense for 193 yards on 31 carries, scoring four touchdowns, leading the Yellow Jackets to a 31-26 victory last night in their 2009 season opener at Midland’s Grande Communications stadium.

Broach scored all of the Yellow Jackets’ TDs - scoring in every quarter - on runs of 1,1, 6 and 22 yards.

The offensive line opened plenty of holes all night long for the elusive running back, from whom Coach Scott Smith said he was expecting big things this season.

Senior quarterback and Division 1 San Diego State recruit Adam Dingwell, whom Coach Smith also expects to have a great season, started off the season well by completing 13 of 18 passes for163 yards to six different receivers in Rockwall’s balanced offense. 

Scott Loy and Will Beasley each caught four passes, for 70 and 54 yards, respectively. Luke Wardell, Spencer Edwards, Reed Loftis and Josh Broach also grabbed passes.

Midway through the third quarter, it appeared the Yellow Jackets could be on their way to a rout. After the Dawgs scored the opening touchdown of the game, Rockwall scored 24 points in a row – on three TDs, 3 PATs, plus a 31-yard Travis Shinn field goal. But Midland’s defense stiffened and their offense came alive, scoring twice in a row - once after an intercepted pass - bringing the score to 24-21.

Broach then scampered 22 yards for his fourth TD, giving Rockwall a 31-21 lead. Midland scored once more but their two-point conversion failed and time ran out.

For their efforts, Rockwall also outgained Midland in first downs, 19-17.  Rockwall rushed for 229 yards on 41 carries to Midland’s 168 yards on 29 carries, but Midland had more passing yardage, 188 to 158 yards. Midland’s Jack Bolger completed 20 of 24 passes to eight different receivers for 181 yards.

Midland had six penalties for 45 yards compared to the Yellow Jackets’ four penalities for 35 yards. Neither team lost a fumble, but Midland did intercept one of Dingwell’s passes. Rockwall averaged 47 yards on three punts, compared to Midland’s 41 yard average on two punts.

In other Class 4A District 10 action, Greenville beat Forney, 25-19, Richardson Pearce beat Sachse, 49-28 and Carrollton’s Newman Smith lost to Denton Guyer, 34-28.

District 10 favorite Highland Park opens its season tonight against Red Oak and Carrollton Turner plays Terrell. 

Rockwall-Heath begins season play this Friday night at Sherman, while Royse City opens Friday night at Atlanta.  

In area private school action, Rockwall Christian lost to Wautaga Harvest Christian lasts night, 28-6.
