The 20-year-old son of Rockwall ISD school board member Doug Hamilton died last Thursday night at Baylor Hospital of Dallas due to injuries suffered in a traffic accident which occurred about 6:30 pm that same evening on I-30 in Garland.

Alexander “Alex” Hamilton, 20, evidently lost control of the vehicle he was driving eastbound on I-30 near Bass Rd. in Garland, according to Garland Police officer Joe Harn.

Harn said the car he was driving swerved from an inside lane into the far right lane and struck a concrete barrier, in what was essentially the right shoulder of the highway. A heavy flatbed truck then struck Alex’s car from behind. Speed and failure to maintain control were cited as contributing factors for the crash, said Harn.

Alex was transported immediately to Baylor Hospital but passed away after his arrival there, the officer added. No official time of death was given.

The accident backed up traffic for miles in both directions, for several hours.

Alex was a 2007 graduate of Rockwall High School, where he also played football and was selected to the All-District second team for his efforts. He also attended and played football at the University of North Texas in Denton.

He was a full-time student at Collin County Community College at the time of his death, according to his obituary at Rest Haven Funeral Home.

He is survived by his parents, Doug and Janet Hamilton of Rockwall; sisters Kristen Hamilton of Richardson and Lyndse Hamilton of Edmond, OK; girlfriend Annette Martinez of Rockwall; grandparents Marvin and Marilyn Alexander of Rockwall and Clyde and Freda Hamilton of Dallas; plus numerous aunts and uncles, including Dennis and Kathie Bailey of Heath, and his beloved dog “Dodge.”

His funeral has been scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2 pm, at Lake Pointe Church.

A visitation has been scheduled at Rest Haven Funeral Home’s Rockwall chapel, Monday, Nov. 9, from 6-8 pm.
