By J.J. Smith. ESPNDallas reported yesterday afternoon that the Dallas Cowboys have traded wide receiver Patrick Crayton to the San Diego Chargers for a seventh-round draft pick, which could be upgraded to a sixth if Crayton catches more than 40 passes this year.

He averaged 38 receptions for each of the past two seasons. He caught 37 passes for 622 yards and five touchdowns last year. He was also the Cowboys punt returner.

They also traded backup offensive lineman Pat McQuistan for a sixth-round draft choice to Miami. He was a Cowboys seventh-round pick in 2006, but had become mainly a special teams player.

“I’m glad that it’s over so I can now know what needs to be focused on,” Crayton told ESPN 103.3 FM’s Galloway and Company yesterday. “I’m going to a contender. A legitimate shot to go out there and be the No. 2 and contribute.”

His status as the Cowboys 3^rd receiver had changed this season with the addition of rookie first-round draft choice Dez Bryant from Oklahoma State.

The move allows the Cowboys to go younger and move second-year player Kevin Ogletree to the fourth receiver behind Bryant and starters Miles Austin and Roy Williams.

“He got off to a good start last year,” team executive Stephen Jones said of Ogletree. “He made some big plays in big games for us. I certainly think his future is bright. Obviously, this does clear the way for him to do more. I’m certain that he’ll answer the bell.”

Crayton had sought a release following April’s NFL draft, after the Cowboys drafted Bryant. After missing several workouts, Crayton returned for the mandatory minicamp stating he wanted to remain with the team and compete for playing time.

Twith he Cowboys spoke several teams last week regarding Crayton’s availability, according to the ESPN report. After Thursday’s final preseason game, Crayton’s agent, Fred Lyles, requested the team release his client. San Diego then contacted the Cowboys about a possible trade.

Crayton sounded excited about the trade and his chance to become a starting receiver in the ESPN interview.

“You know I’m licking my chops about that one,” Crayton told ESPNDallas.com’s Ben Rogers. “I go from one Pro Bowl quarterback [Tony Romo] to another [Philip Rivers]. One Pro Bowl tight end [Jason Witten] to another [Antonio Gates]. Another dominant defense, a nice, young running back, a good offensive line … I’m looking forward to it.”
