UT student from Rockwall hit by campus bus – video

(NBC5-TV News) AUSTIN – An 18-year-old from Rockwall was recovering Friday night after he was hit by a bus on campus at the University of Texas at Austin.

Nick Engmann, who is in his first year at UT, was participating in an exam week tradition when he was hit.

Students stand on opposite sides of the street and wave foam swords. It’s intended to reduce stress, but on Friday afternoon, it created a lot more of it.

ROCKWALL – Several thousand people are again expected to attend the semi-annual Aspasians Arts & Crafts Fair this Saturday on the Old Courthouse Square from 9 am to 5 pm.

Funds raised from booth sales and refreshments are used by the Aspasians women’s organization for college scholarships for graduating Rockwall County high school seniors, plus are donated to local organizations and individuals in need.

Helping Hands produces new video to raise funds for 2012 Annual Campaign

ROCKWALL – Rockwall County Helping Hands has produced this video to help promote the non-profit assistance agency’s 2012 Annual Campaign to raise funds to aid local families and individuals who are struggling financially to make ends meet.

According to Executive Director Margo Nielsen, there are thousands of families and individuals across Rockwall County who currently need and will need assistance this year.

She’s asking County residents to give generously now and all year-long so Helping Hands can provide County residents in need with nutritious meals, school supplies, shelter payments and affordable health care.

In 2011, the Agency’s assistance program provided:

4,205 clients with food, shelter payments, utility bills, household goods and/or clothing

24,000+ bags of food from our Food Pantry

250 families with Thanksgiving turkeys and food baskets

1,229 children (about 495 families) with three new toys each plus stocking-stuffers at Christmas

Helping Hands also served 1,683 new patients and 5,777 returning patients – including 2,348 children – at the Health Center.

Chase ends on bridge over Lake Ray Hubbard

ROWLETT, Texas – There were tense moments along Interstate 30 Tuesday afternoon as state troopers pursued a suspect.

The chase started in Hunt County around Greenville. A Department of Public Safety officer tried to pull over a man in a Mustang for a traffic violation but he wouldn’t stop. He fled west on I-30 and kept going on his rims even after hitting spike strips.

At one point the car fishtailed and began to spin. A tire went flying, but troopers didn’t take the man out. They followed him as he exited the interstate at Dalrock Road and headed north through Rowlett.

County Commissioner Under Fire for Shortening Flagpole

(NBC5-TV News) ROCKWALL – Old Glory and the Lone Star Flag are at the center of a heated controversy after a Rockwall County Commissioner admitted to cutting 5 feet off the American flag’s pole at the county’s new Veterans Memorial.

During Tuesday morning’s commissioner’s court meeting, County Commissioner Jerry Wimpee got a verbal slashing from veterans and residents who want the flagpole restored to its original height of 40 feet.

Wimpee said he lowered the pole to 35 feet to match the height of two adjacent flagpoles flying the Texas state flag and the POW flag.

(NBC5-TV) Rockwall – Rockwall police are on the lookout for an online predator who could be preying on students in the middle and high schools using Facebook.

Someone using the name “Jenny Klasp” is sending inappropriate and explicit messages on the social-networking site, police said.

Police said a middle school student heard a man’s voice and quickly hung up when he tried calling the number tied to the account.

Rockwall County could soon see all-electronic ballots

(NBC5TV News) ROCKWALL – The way people vote in Rockwall County could be changing as the county looks to advance with technology.

Right now, half of the county still uses paper ballots as their preferred method of voting, but the county has assembled a committee to explore the possibility of going all electronic.

“It’s about change,” said Glenda Denton, of Rockwall County Elections. “Our county is about half paper, half electronic-type balloting, and with technology changes and what’s coming in the future, the judge wants to explore that opportunity.”
