90-year-old US Rep. Ralph Hall to swim English Channel?

ROCKWALL -  During a telephone interview yesterday with, just turned 90-year-old U.S. Rep. Ralph Hall said that he might parachute from a plane again soon and then laughed and asked, “I was thinking that maybe I should swim the English Channel instead. What do you think?”

We wouldn’t put it past him.

The oldest-serving member in history of the U.S. House of Representatives, who turned 90 May 3, says he is still in good health. He still often runs two miles a day.

But can he swim the 18.2 nautical miles from Dover England to Cap Griz Nez, France, in extremely cold water with choppy waves, while dodging the 500+ ships per day traveling through the Channel, as well as ferries, seacats, jetfoils, timber and rubbish, which the Channel is known for?

“I am 90 years old,” he said in the interview. “But I don’t feel it. Don’t know where all the time has gone.”

The dean of the U.S. Congress said he still visits his home District most every week, gets out and meets with folks from around the District and is still hard at work in Washington D.C. “battling Obamacare and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) every week.”

Last year on the Saturday over Memorial Day weekend, Hall went skydiving in honor of all those who have served in the military. From high over Rockwall, at about noon, he jumped tandem with an instructor who is also a grandfather and military veteran.

The Congressman said that he thoroughly enjoyed the experience, which lasted about 10 minutes from the time they jumped out of the small plane until they landed.

“I want to do it again,” he said, smiling, dressed in a patriotic flag-covered jumpsuit and bandana.

“I didn’t make up my mind until the night before at that school when I saw all those school children honoring everybody that had been in the service,” said Hall. “This is a jump for them and its great for everybody here in my view and that’s served.”

Now the question is, should he skydive again or swim the English Channel? Or do something else that very few other 90-year-olds can do?

What do you think?

  1. Hmmm…how does he drop from 84% in 2011 & 95% in 2010 to 47% in 2012 and 40% in 2013? That makes no sense. What is he suddenly, a wild-eyed liberal? Perhaps some mistakes in tabulating his voting record? His lifetime score is 77%, quite conservative it appears.

Is he hoping we overlook his voting record by pulling this stunt? A 40% grade from Freedomworks shows how out of touch he really is.

  3. Lyndse H. says:

Just to clarify: the occasional personal show off is necessary to prove he’s not as ancient as some assume him to be. The showing off he avoids is the political kind. Which is refreshing.

I think he should sky dive again! Mainly because I’d love to jump with him!

He’s a great man that works endlessly, and is sharper than more 50 year olds. He understands that tact works better than showing off for the media.

I’m proud to call him my congressman!

    How about retire….
