Yellowjackets score 4 runs in 5th inning, defeat N. Mesquite, 5-2

(By Stewie Fielder) MESQUITE – Rockwall High School scored four runs in a big fifth inning, thanks to Kendall Coleman’s RBI-double and Cole Ballew’s RBI-triple, Alec Vice pitched a complete game and the Yellowjackets defeated North Mesquite last night, 5-2. Vice had eight strikeouts.

During the bottom of the second inning, North Mesquite took an early lead, 1-0, when Santoyo scored Benavidez. But in the top of the fifth, Rockwall roared back, scoring four runs.

Right-fielder Coleman smashed a double, driving in one run. A fielder’s choice hit by Carson Childers drove in another, and the triple by left-fielder Ballew scored another.

North Mesquite battled back in the sixth inning, when Starks pushed one run across the plate with an RBI triple.  Down the stretch, Vice showed strength as he battled on the mound.

During the seventh inning, the Mustangs had the tying run at the plate with two runners at first and second.  But the Mustangs hit into a game-ending play from shortstop Angiel to first basemen Glover, resulting in a 5-2 Rockwall win.

Rockwall will host Tyler Lee at 7 pm on Friday at the Campbell Complex.  Rockwall holds second place in District 12-5A (6-3, 20-6).
