ROCKWALL – The Rockwall ISD Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Russ Reeves as the district’s new athletic director Feb. 14 and he began his duties Feb. 25.
He replaces Coach Scott Smith, who is now an assistant coach at Houston Baptist University.
Coach Reeves (shown above center with RISD Superintendent Jeff Bailey, left, and RISD Board President Doug Hamilton) had served as the assistant director of athletics at Denton ISD since 2007, assisting with all athletic programs including oversight of budgeting, game reports, transportation, game administration, personnel and program implementation.
Recognized as a certified athletic administrator by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, Coach Reeves is very active in the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association and works closely with athletic directors all over the State of Texas. He has served on many THSADA committees that promote interscholastic athletics throughout the state such as the Marketing Committee, Membership Committee and the 2012 State Conference Host Committee.
Reeves previously served as a teacher and coach at Corsicana, Keller and Denton High Schools, where he taught Texas History, American History, World Geography, Humanities II, ESL and Pre-AP U.S. History, World History and Physical Education. His coaching duties included football, powerlifting, wrestling, cross country, and track and field. He has coached both girls and boys athletics.
He has a Bachelor of Science in physical education with a minor in history and a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of North Texas.
“I am so humbled and blessed to now be a part of such a wonderful community and school district,” said Coach Reeves. “It is obvious that athletics is woven into the fabric of the Rockwall community and it will be exciting to work alongside people who value and understand the vital role athletics plays in the overall educational process of our students in Rockwall ISD. ”
“We are very pleased to welcome Coach Reeves to Rockwall ISD,” said RISD Superintendent Jeff Bailey. “His experience as a teacher, a coach and an assistant director of athletics give him broad insight and we know that he will provide strong leadership for our athletic programs as well as be a strong partner for our teachers and our school administration.”
