Rockwall High Academic Decathalon team wins 4th straight State Championship

EL PASO – Defending three-time State High School Academic Decathalon Champion Rockwall High School won its fourth straight State Championship Feb. 22-24 at El Paso High School and was the highest scoring team in the state, regardless of size, defeating Pearland High School by 1,300 points.

Rockwall-Heath High School finished in third place, followed by Irving Nimitz and Clear Lake.

Rockwall earned 52,535 points, compared to Pearland’s 51,235 and Heath’s 47,152.

Rockwall will now advance to the national championships in Minneapolis MN April 25-27, 2013.

Coached by Michael Oldham and Nicole Redmond, the team’s members won 26 medals and brought home  $22,800 in scholarship money.

Team Members, medals and scholarship money received were:

  • Enrico Trevisani – Gold in Interview, Gold in Music, Gold in Art, First Overall Individual Varsity Student.  $4700 in scholarship money
  • Jonny Saunders – Gold in Music, Silver in Economics, Gold in Science, Silver in Social Science, First Overall Scholastic Student.  $4700 in scholarship money
  • Tommy Nguyen – Bronze in Math, Silver in Science, Second Overall Scholastic Student. $3700 in scholarship money
  • Grant Workings – Silver in Music, Bronze in Science, Silver in Art, Bronze in Social Science, Third Overall Varsity Student.  $2700 in scholarship money
  • Jacob Cariker – Silver in Music, Gold in Economics, Gold in Science, Silver in Art, Gold in Social Science, Fourth Overall Honors Student.  $2200 in scholarship money
  • Cade Janke – Gold in Interview (perfect score), Gold in Speech (perfect score), Bronze in Math.  $1200 in scholarship money
  • Kennady Abbott – Gold in Economics, Bronze in Science, Bronze in Art. $1200 in scholarship money
  • Sarah Jester – Silver in Music, Silver in Language and Literature.  $1200 in scholarship money
  • Rebecca Voth- $1200 in scholarship money
  • Supporting team members:  Jessie Hall, Charli Helfrich, and Hope Wallace

This is Heath’s first year competing in the 5A large school division. The school has only had an Academic Decathlon team for six years. Team members won a total of five medals and brought home $4,500 in scholarship money.

  • Bridget Lamm-  $500 in scholarship money
  • Trevor Reichardt- $500 in scholarship money
  • Isaac Thacker- $500 in scholarship money
  • Supporting team members: Carlo Cruzet, Marlie Nightengale, Cole Perlitz and Daniel Boles
