Former Heath baseball star Jake Thompson invited to Detroit Tigers Mini Camp
Former All-American Rockwall-Heath High baseball star Jake Thompson will get an opportunity soon to make an impression on the big leagues in Spring Training as an invitee to 2013 Detroit Tigers Mini-Camp.
The 91st overall pick in June’s draft could be the next young Tigers pitcher to move quickly through their system.
Thompson, 19, reports to the Tigers’ Spring Training facility in Lakeland FL in mid-February before everyone reports for Spring Training. Mini Camp is a chance for an organization’s prospects to get a close evaluation and hopefully impress in a Spring Training environment and participate in preseason games.
According to the Tigers, Thompson, 19, was excellent in his first season, totaling 28 1/3 innings while allowing only 6 earned runs (1.91 ERA), 14 hits & 10 walks (0.85 WHIP), and striking out 31. He made seven starts while pitching on an innings limit which, after pitching his high school team to a state championship, is typical of prep pitchers in their first season of professional baseball.
Thompson, who earned national recognition during his high school career at Rockwall-Heath, had committed to TCU to play collegiate ball before ultimately turning professional. Now, he has a chance to take a step closer to the big club.
“I am very excited and appreciative of the opportunity” he said. “It’s a big honor to get invited. I will do my best to make the most of it.”
