Best Supreme pizza I ever tasted at new Pizza Cucina near Brookshire’s

(By J.J. Smith) ROCKWALL – Last week I had the pleasure of eating the very best Supreme pizza I’ve ever tasted, made at the new Pizza Cucina, which recently opened in Rockwall next to Brookshire’s Food Store.

“Cucina” means “kitchen” in Italian. It’s strictly a carry-out, delivery and catering operation, just like most pizza places nowadays. The smell alone, when I first walked in, made my mouth water; and I found the service to be very friendly and prompt.

All Pizza Cucina pizzas, calzones, pastas, sandwiches, starters and salads are made from scratch, covered with loads of fresh ingredients.

For example, my Supreme was layered with fresh pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground beef, fresh mushrooms, red onions, black olives, green bell peppers, plenty of red sauce and tons of mozzarella cheese, all on what I would call a very flavorful “traditional” crust – not too thin and not too thick. The special recipe crust is made daily in their kitchen.

According to co-owner Oya Varhan, their unique, rich recipes are the same which have delighted their customers for the past 11 years in Mandeville, Louisiana, where they operated a full-service Italian restaurant. They moved to Rockwall recently to be closer to family members.

“We may be new to Rockwall, but our recipes make for a unique, rich flavor that have delighted our customers for years,” she said. “Our commitment is, and always has been, to consistently provide you and your family with the highest-quality meals with the freshest ingredients.”

Since I ordered half Supreme and half BBQ Chicken Pizza, I was also able to enjoy the BBQ, covered with delicious chicken, bacon, red onion, roasted  garlic, BBQ sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheese.  I was also one of the best I’ve ever tasted.

My wife said she loved the large Ela’s Salad, which features a plentiful Spring Mix of lettuce and greens, tomatoes, red onions, bacon bits, toasted pecans, dried cranberries, and feta cheese with homemade balsamic vinaigrette dressing.  On a 10-point scale, she gave it a high “9,” stating how delicious it was. She said for her tastes, the dressing had just a bit too much oil. Otherwise it was perfect. She’ll be ordering it again frequently.

Other salads which tempted her were the Signature Cucina Salad, Mediterranean, Italian, Spinach and Caesar, priced from $4.25 to $7.25 for a large. Add chicken or shrimp for about $3-4 more.

Pizza Cucina offers a large menu, featuring traditional pizzas with your choice of over 20 fresh ingredients and four sauces, including Traditional, Garlic Herb, Pesto or Alfredo.  Prices range from $9.35 for a 12-inch medium to $19.35 for a 16-inch extra large.

They offer such gourmet pizzas as Margherita (with fresh basil & more), Four Seasons (four different flavors separated by dough ropes), Shrimp Pesto, Spinach, Artichoke and Muffuletta (a Louisiana specialty with garlic herb sauce, genoa salami, ham, olive salad and two cheeses). Prices are similar to the traditional pizzas.

Other entrees on the menu are Meat Lovers, Supreme, Chicken Pesto and Spinach & Artichoke Calzones, as well as Spaghetti & Meatballs and Lasagna, for $9-$11.

Large sandwiches, priced from $7.50-$8 are Chicken Caesar, Philly Cheese, Grilled Chicken Parmesan, Grilled Chicken Pesto, Ham & Cheese, Spinach, Roasted Eggplant & Red Pepper, Meatball, Muffuletta, and BBQ.

Starters are Mozzarella Sticks or Bread Sticks served with marinara sauce for about $4-6. Buffalo Wings, served with celery and blue cheese dressing, range from about $6 for six to $19 for 24 wings.
