Rockwall High girls gymnastics team wins second straight Division 1 State Championship

(Judy Pettett Photo) SAN ANGELO – The defending State Champion Rockwall Girls Gymnastics team won its second straight Division I State Championship and fifth in the program’s history May 3-5 with a superb, come-from-behind performance at the Junell Center on the Angelo State University campus in San Angelo.

Coach Denise Hedges’ Back-To-Back Champion Lady Jackets – third after Thursday’s Optional competition – passed Hurst L.D. Bell and host San Angelo Central, finishing with a score of 230.50, 1.7 points ahead of runner-up Bell’s 228.70 – two points below its winning score from 2011. San Angelo Central finished with third with 228.60.

Three Lady Jackets placed among the top 10 All-Around: Laura Arce tied for third at 76.40, Sarah Beasley tied for sixth with 76.15 and Kailea Coles finished ninth at 76.00.

In Floor Exercises, Coles tied for sixth, Arce finished ninth and Beasley tied for 14th with Jenna Jeffrey.

On the Beam, Coles captured third place, Beasley 11th and Arce 15th.

On Vault, Coles finished in fourth place, Arce tied for fifth, Tori Hedges came in ninth and Hayden Raney finished 13th.

On the Uneven Bars, Beasley took seventh place, Arce tied for eighth and Jenna Jeffrey tied for 11th.

Arce, Beasley, Coles and Tori Hedges competed for individual state championships May 6 after they finished among the top 10 in one or more events.

Arce qualified in the all-around, vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Beasley competed in all-around and uneven bars; Coles in all-around, vault, balance beam and floor exercise, and Hedges in the vault.

2nd – LD Bell 228.70
3rd – San Angelo Central 228.60
4th – Trinity 227.10
5th – Grapevine 224.50
6th – Kingwood 224.45

Individual All Around:

Laura Arce – tied for 3rd – 76.40
Sarah Beasley – tied for 6th – 76.15
Kailea Coles – 9th – 76.00

Arce made event finals in Vault, Bars, Floor but did not compete May 6 due to conflict with a competition in Idaho.
