Tigers’ top draft pick Jake Thompson will sign contract, pass on college
(Detroit Free Press) HEATH – If he passes Tuesday’s routine physical in Lakeland, Fla., the Tigers are expected to announce that their top draft pick from last week, right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson, is a Tigers farmhand.
Thompson, 18, is bypassing his Texas Christian University scholarship to sign with a team that snagged him in the second round of last week’s amateur draft.
“It’s going to be Detroit, as long as I pass that physical,” Thompson said Monday from his home in Rockwall, Texas, where Thompson lives and where he this month finished his senior year at Rockwall-Heath High School. “With the Tigers taking me in the second round, I knew basically when they called my name I was going to sign. I want to get out there right away, and just get comfortable and get started.”
