Led by All-American senior pitcher and slugger Jake Thompson, who was selected by the Detroit Tigers as their first pick in the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday, the Hawks (34-9) are making the trip for the first time after two near misses in 2011 and 2010.

The Hawks are currently ranked as the 34th top team in the nation by the Powerade Fab 50, after being ranked 50th last week.

Coach Greg Harvey said Thompson will take the mound Thursday in the Hawks’ 4 pm semifinal game vs. Montgomery (29-13) at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

If they win, Coach Harvey said four-year starter Jovan Hernandez will pitch in the Final State Championship game vs. the winner of Thursday’s 7m semi-final between Austin Lake Travis (33-10) and Cleburne (29-10).
