Spencer Edwards, Jake Thompson, Drew VerHagen, Travis Ballew also drafted

ROCKWALL (Travis Ballew photo by Sam Ballew)- Three more Rockwall area baseball players were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday, after Rockwall High catcher Steve Bean was selected 59th as the first pick of the world-champion St. Louis Cardinals.

Rockwall shorstop Spencer Edwards (above left), a University of Texas signee, was chosen by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 88th pick, followed at #91 by Rockwall-Heath pitcher Jake Thompson (above middle), a TCU signee, who was drafted as the first pick by the Detroit Tigers.

Heath 2009 grad, Drew Verhagen (above right), currently a junior pitcher at Vanderbilt University, was selected in the third round by the Detroit Tigers.

Right-handed Texas State University pitcher Travis Ballew, who graduated from Rockwall in 2009, was chosen by the Houston Astros as their 23rd selection in Wednesday’s draft.

Each player must now decide whether to continue with college baseball or negotiate a contract with the major league baseball team which drafted them.
