Heath Hawks beat Frisco Wakeland twice, head to State baseball Final 4 Thursday

ROCKWALL – The third time was indeed the charm and the Heath Hawks baseball team is this time headed to the State 4-A Final Four High School Baseball Championships this Thursday, after taking two of three games from Frisco Wakeland last weekend.

This is the third year in a row that Coach Greg Harvey’s team played in the best-of-3 Region II-4A Finals, losing last year to Wakeland.

Heath (34-9) will play Montgomery (29-13), the Region III-4A champion, in a semifinal at 4 pm Thursday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.

The winner will advance to Friday’s 7 pm State Final at Dell Diamond against the winner of the 7 pm semifinal between Austin Lake Travis (33-10) and Cleburne (29-10).

The Hawks qualified Saturday by overcoming a brief 2-0 first inning Wakeland lead in the rubber game of the best-of-three series, blasting Frisco, 9-2.

Heroes of the come-from-behind victory were ace pitcher and TCU recruit Jake Thompson, who threw a six-hit, complete game and hit a two-run homer;  Austin Stewart, who drove in three runs with two, two-out singles; and Bret Boswell, who drove in two runs.

Heath had won the first game, 8-1,  and Wakeland the second, 1-0.

Tickets for the Montgomery game will only be available at Dell Diamond. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. All-Tournament passes are $30 each, good for any game at any level, 1A through 5A.
