Heath Hawks begin round 2 of District baseball action tonight vs. Pearce

(By Aaron Williams) HEATH – The Hawks of Rockwall-Heath begin round two of district 10-4A baseball action tonight at 7:30 at Rockwall-Heath High School. The opponent will be the Mustangs of Richardson J.J. Pearce.

Pearce comes into tonight’s game with a 2-5 district slate and in seventh place in the standings while the Hawks stand at 5-2 and currently occupy second place, one game behind Rockwall.

Pearce is expected the throw Trevor Renfro, a senior signed to play at Texas State next year, who comes into the game with 1-3 record despite a 2.92 ERA. Renfro also leads the Mustangs with a .432 average and 17 RBI.

TCU-bound senior Jake Thompson, the reigning two time 10-4A MVP, will be on the mound for Heath. Thompson has been very sharp this year as he leads the region with a 5-0 record to go with a minuscule .341 ERA. He has amassed 76 strikeouts in only 41 innings of work.

Offensively for Heath, Timbo Duncan has had a hot bat all season long and carries a team leading .391 average and 19 RBI into tonight’s contest. Jake Thompson at .355, Jovan Hernandez at .339, and junior Bret Boswell at .338 have carried most of the offensive load for the Hawks and senior DH/C Jake Bledsoe has chipped in with 18 RBI.

The first meeting this year resulted in a pitcher’s duel between Thompson and Renfro as Heath squeaked out a hard fought 2-1 victory. Renfro and Thompson both pitched very well as each allowed only one earned run. Thompson crushed a long solo homer and tallied a school record tying 18 strikeouts in his win.
