5 candidates running for Rockwall Council seats in May 12 election

ROCKWALL – Five candidates are running for two open seats on the Rockwall City Council in the May 12 municipal election.

Terms for the part-time positions are two years in length, and Council members are paid $250 per month plus expenses.

Freddie Jackson, Michael Johnston and Dennis Lewis are running for Place 4, which has been filled by Cliff Sevier, who has reached his three-term limit.

Jonathan Gideon Singh and Mike Townsend are running for Place 6, which has been held by Margo Nielsen, who has reached her three-term limit.

Jackson, Lewis and Townsend ran unsuccessfully for Council seats in 2010. Johnston and Singh are newcomers to political races.

According to their applications on file with the City Secretary, Jackson, 50,works for the US Postal Service and has lived in Rockwall for 5.5 years.

Johnston, 34, co-owns a Dallas architectural firm, who has lived in Rockwall for one year.

Lewis, 55, is Vice President of a concrete company, who has lived in Rockwall for 19 years.

Singh, 26, is a consultant/volunteer who has lived in Rockwall for 21 years.

Townsend, 43, is a business manager who has live in Rockwall for 14 years.

Two-term Council member and Mayor Pro Tem Mark Russo, 36, is running unopposed for his third term. Since he also filed to run for a new County Justice of the Peace position, he will step down from his Council seat if he wins the JP race. A new Council election will then be needed to fill that position.
