Rockwall girls win 48-35, play Saturday for 4A State Championship

AUSTIN —The Rockwall girls basketball team is now just one win away from becoming State basketball champions for the second time in five years.

They were the undefeated, 40-0, 5A state champions in 2007.

The Lady Jackets (34-7) will play Mansfield Summit (36-3) for the 4A championship Saturday at 3:30 pm in the Frank Erwin Center on the campus of the University of Texas.

Mansfield was the 2009 state 5A champion.

Thursday, behind Paige Turner’s 18 points (right photo), the girls beat Victoria East in the Class 4A state semifinals, 48-35.

The Jackets’ 6-1 star center and Rice University commit Alyssa Lang (left photo) scored nine points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds in only 21 minutes before she fouled out with about four minutes left in the game. That left Rockwall fans a bit nervous but not the rest of the team.

After the 6-1 senior fouled out, Rockwall outscored Victoria East, 8-1.

By playing great defense, rebounding hard and with smart play, they pushed the lead to 42-34 with 2:06 left. During one possession, Rockwall passed the ball for more than a minute before Paige Turner drove to the basket and was fouled and made two free throws

Kayla Smith made four straight free throws to extend the lead to 11. Rockwall made only 9 of its first 18 free throws but then sunk its final 10 to secure the victory
