Hernandez, Thompson named All-Area, All-State, All-Americans

By Keith Thompson. HEATH – On the heels of another very successful season of Heath Hawk baseball, post-season awards and recognition have continued to come in for the talented Hawk duo of Jovan Hernandez (left) and Jake Thompson. The two, through outstanding hitting and pitching, carried the Hawks to the Region II finals for the second consecutive year.

The Dallas Morning News announced their All-Area selections last week and Hernandez and Thompson were selected First Team Utility players in honor of their dual efforts on the mound and at the plate. Hernandez, the District 10-4A Pitcher of the Year, went 11-1 with a 1.32 ERA. He was also a major force at the plate with a .393 batting average to go along with 11 HRs and 53 RBI.

Thompson, District 10-4A’s MVP (Most Valuable Player) for the second straight year, finished with a .504 batting average coupled with a school record 15 HRs and 58 RBI. He was at his best in the playoffs where he smacked seven of his homers. Thompson finished with a 12-3 record and a 1.90 ERA. He amassed an area leading 131 strikeouts in his 88 innings pitched.

The Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association also found the Hawk twosome worthy of post-season recognition. They selected Thompson as their First Team All-State First Baseman and Hernandez as the Second Team All-State Third Baseman.

On June 20, the Collegiate Baseball News, in conjunction with Louisville Slugger released their All American team. Thompson and Hernandez were both selected to the squad for the second consecutive season. Not many programs can boast of having two players who achieved All American and All State status twice before their senior seasons.

Although the season ended just a short time ago, everyone involved with Heath Hawk baseball is eagerly anticipating the 2012 season as the Hawks, behind eight returning starters, make another run at the school’s first state championship.
