Terrell man who is Mesquite pastor arrested on rape charges

CHARLESTON WV -  A Terrell married man with four children, who is the pastor of the Open Door Baptist Church in Mesquite, was arrested Thursday morning in West Virginia on charges of sexually assaulting a woman he met there at a bar the night before.

Matthew D. Jarrell, 41, is charged with second-degree sexual assault, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court. He was taken to the South Central Regional Jail, where he remained under a $75,000 cash-only bail Thursday evening.

Jarrell is an Army veteran who has been a pastor of the Church with a few hundred members since 2004.

According to the complaint, the 36-year-old woman was approached at the unnamed bar by Jarrell, whom she did not know. She needed a ride home, and he said he would take her. Instead, he drove to an area off Martins Branch Road in Sissonville, where he held the woman’s face down on the seat of his truck and forcibly sodomized her.

After the woman escaped, she contacted police and described Jarrell and his truck. When a sheriff’s deputy detained Jarrell, he originally denied having sex with the woman, but later admitted to it, the complaint read.

“According to family members, Jarrell was supposed to be in Pennsylvania,” stated Lt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department in a news release.

Crosier said Jarrell has similar sexual assault charges from 2007 pending in San Antonio. No trial date in that case has been set. The details of that alleged assault were not available Friday.

The Church’s website has been taken down and replaced with the following message:

Thank you for visiting and we covet your prayers during this difficult time.

We will update this site as more information is available. However, during this time, we will continue to serve the Lord as we have for the past 46 years.

Hope to see you Sunday,
The Entire Church Membership

Seriously? You need proof? He admitted he did it. This is the THIRD time he has been arrested for a sexual crime. He did it. He was a pig. I fe sorry for his kids and wonder about his wife. If she truly didn’t know, I feel bad for her too. However she posted bail for him 2 other times and was in West Virginia to pay a $75,000 cash bond when he decided to kill himself. I don’t see how she couldn’t know.

I agree with DJ. The investigators should collect ALL evidence and check for potential witnesses. If the evidence finds him innocent, his blood will be on their hands. I knew Pastor Jarrell and his family and he did a lot of good things for God. However, IF he was guilty, then God will be his judge. We are ALL sinners and ALL human. We make bad choices, some just don’t get caught. But God knows all things and He WILL be our judge one day SOON!!

Ok “Rape” victim.. Where’s your proof? Where’s the useless sheriffs proof? All they did is allege that he did this.. Where’s the DNA sample taken from her to prove he’s guilty? Where’s the evidence removes from his clothes? And a cash only bond.. You guys may think we’re all stupid but one day you will be overthrown when the people realize u kill the innocent. Why wouldn’t you let him talk to his son? You waited and he “commited suicide”.. Which you probably had staged it as one.. He had a cell mate.. You’re attacking the church but God will attack you back.. Not now but your time will come..
