Forney edges Royse City in softball quarterfinals opener, 3-2

By Marcus Murphree & Mark Buford, Special Contributors. Forney’s (31-7) error free defense preserved an early 2-0 lead for an eventual 3-2 win over Royce City (24-9) in the series opener of the Class 4A Region 2 softball quarterfinals.

Both pitchers went the distance with Royse City’s ace Alicia Pille getting tabbed with the loss even after logging 12 strikeouts, while Macie Tillery got the win.

Forney scored twice in the second inning on a two out rally after catcher Krista Williams reached on an error. Christina Binford then came in as a courtesy runner, and she moved to third on a single through the right side by Brook McCarroll, one of two Forney hits in the game. McCarroll stole second base on the first pitch from Pille, getting into scoring position.

With two on and two outs and an 0-2 count to second baseman Taylor Penn, Pille delivered a high fastball out of the reach of catcher Kyla Simmons, scoring Binford. Simmons’ throw to Pille, who was covering home, was offline bringing a hustling McCarroll across.

“As soon as McCarroll saw it get away when Binford scored, she was going,” Forney head coach Eric Montgomery said.

Forney’s offense was kept quiet by Pille, a University of Kansas recruit. None of the runs were earned, with the third Forney run coming on three consecutive errors by Royse City in the seventh.

“We were finding ways to put the bat on the ball against Pille,” Montgomery said. “That was our goal all along and it worked out for us.”

Keeping Royse City’s offense in check was Penn who made several grabs on shallow fly balls to right and recorded the final out on a grounder with two runners on in the bottom on the seventh.
