Royse City girls shut out Corsicana again after forfeit declared

DUNCANVILLE — U. of Kansas signee Alicia Pille pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 10 to lead Royse City to a 1-0 win over Corsicana yesterday in an unexpected Class 4A regional quarterfinal game, after the state’s 10th-ranked 4A team announced it had to forfeit last Friday’s 5-0 victory because it had unknowingly used an ineligible player.

“It was just one of those things that slipped through the cracks,” Royse City coach Michelle Booker said. “We looked at it every way we could, but we had to do the right thing.”

The forfeit left the series tied at one win apiece, forcing Tuesday’s additional game.

After winning games Thursday and Friday, Royse City thought it had swept Corsicana in a best-of-3 second-round playoff series and had advanced to face Forney Tuesday in the regional quarterfinals.

The Lady Dawgs scored the winning run in the fourth inning as Kyla Simmons led off with a double and pinch-runner Haley Molock scored on a wild pitch.

Now Royse City will play Forney at 7:30 pm Thursday at home in the Class 4A Region II quarterfinals.

I’m sure there is a logical answer, but as a coach myself, I would like to know the story behind how Royse City unknowingly used an ineligible player and then find out shortly afterwards about it. Hats off to the coach for self reporting this.
