Royse City’s Alicia Pille strikes out 46 batters in two-game sweep

CORSICANA – The Area’s leading softball pitcher, Royse City’s Alicia Pille, struck out a career-high 33 batters Thursday night and 13 more Friday night to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 1-0, 16-inning win and 5-0, 3-hit shutout, respectively, over Corsicana in a Region II-4A Area Round playoff series.

Kansas signee Pille had a perfect game for 9 1/3 innings Thursday in a game that lasted four hours and 53 minutes.

Her strikeout total was 28 short of the national record of 61 that Alicia Hollowell of Fairfield, Calif., struck out in a 30-inning game in 2001.

The national record book only lists the top 10 strikeout games, and none were by pitchers in Texas. There is a tie for ninth and 10th with 42 strikeouts.

Royse City’s Tori Green drilled a single up the middle to score Kourtney Kelley in the bottom of the 16th as the Lady Bulldogs outlasted the Tigers 1-0 in Game 1 of the playoff series.

Royse City loaded the bases on a leadoff double by Kyla Simmons and two walks in the 11th inning, but with one out, Betsy Woodall struck out Tori Green and Brianna Wacyk to keep the game going. The Corsicana pitcher had 13 strikeouts in the game.

Pille is 21-2 on the season and has won 21 consecutive decisions. Royse City was the 10th ranked team in the state before their two victories.
