Rowlett Police searching for ex-con who nearly killed mother, baby yesterday

ROWLETT – Rowlett Police are searching this morning for Jeffery Steele, an ex-con who allegedly tried to burglarize a home in the 6300 block of Magnolia Lane yesterday, assaulted and left a 27-year-old white female unconscious and then attempted to burn the house down.

Had a neighbor not spotted the fire and pulled the woman and her two-year-old son to safety, both may have been killed in what appears to be a house burglary gone wrong.

According to Rowlett Police Public Information Officer John Ellison, after police responded to the reported house fire at 5:03 pm, they found the woman lying unconscious just outside a sliding glass door at the rear of the residence with her two-year-old baby standing by her side.

“After further investigation, it was found that the female who resided at the residence had come home and found a person that was known to her burglarizing the residence,” he said.

“The suspect physically assaulted her, knocking her unconscious, and then fled the scene.”

“Rowlett Fire and EMS responded to the scene, the victim was transported to Lake Pointe Medical Center (in Rowlett) with non-life threatening injuries.”

“The suspect in this case, Jeffrey Steele, has not been arrested but is wanted in connection to this crime.”

“The case is still under investigation. Anyone with information on this case or the whereabouts of Jeffery Steele is asked to call the Rowlett Police Department at 972-412-6200 or 9-1-1.”

Steele, whom neighbors say is an ex-convict that grew up just a block from the victim’s home, is now wanted on two charges of attempted capital murder.

He was last seen driving a late model, silver Chevy Silverado pickup.

Neighbor Jake Joplin first spotted the fire on his way home from work and he pulled the victim and son from the fire just before the house burst into flames.

The victim’s husband is crediting Joplin as his family’s guardian angel for saving his family.
