Rockwall County breaks ground on long-awaited veterans memorial – Rockwall County veterans have been waiting a long time to witness the groundbreaking for a veterans memorial — 66 years, to be exact.

“There was talk about a memorial, but nothing ever happened,” said Lee Gilbert, a Vietnam veteran and a member of the county’s veterans memorial committee. “Nobody ever took the bull by the horns.”

A memorial first was promised by the county on March 2, 1945, on the pages of a Rockwall newspaper. But no progress was ever made, and the idea of a place to honor those who have served the country never went beyond words on yellowed newsprint. Until now.
