Council member David Sweet running for Rockwall Mayor

Two-term Rockwall City Council Member David Sweet has announced he is running for Mayor of Rockwall in the May 14 election.

Win or lose, he will vacate his Council seat to which he was elected in May, 2007, to concentrate on his mayoral campaign and business concerns.

His announced opponents are two-term Council member Glen Farris and former Council member Sam Buffington.

Currently the District Manager of the Sara Lee Corp. and previously a territory manager for Kellogg’s, Sweet says he is seeking the position to provide the City with a pro-business Mayor who listens closely to its citizens and provides a transparent government.

“We need leadership that understands business and the needs of those who want to do business in Rockwall,” he explained. “We can’t expect the citizens to shoulder our debt burden each year through fee increases on basic services.”

“I have focused on watching the spending of taxpayer dollars throughout my four years on Council without a decrease in service that our citizens have come to expect in our beautiful community. I think my council record shows that.”

“My business record of success and the ability to find solutions in a murky economy will provide the humble, steady leadership in these economic times that Rockwall needs.”

He said he will ensure fairness to citizens who speak at council meetings.

“We need leadership that will handle those in front of council with fairness and an even-keeled temperament.’

He will also organize town halls to seek citizen input.

“My leadership record has shown that I welcome citizen input at all levels. I will take the lead in organizing town hall meetings on critical issues and not only listen to those concerns but act on them in prudent fashion,” he said.

Sweet has served the community in many ways since first moving to Rockwall with his wife in 2001. He said he was raised in Mesquite and came here often while growing up to visit his sister and brother-in-law who have lived here for many years.

He is currently active in Rotary Club, was a former board member of the Rockwall Boys & Girls Club and has served as President of both the Rockwall County Republican Men’s Club and Rockwall County Young Republicans.

He’s also volunteered for the past three years as part of the radio broadcast team for Rockwall ISD football and basketball games.

He and his wife, Kim, and their two young sons attend First Baptist Church of Rockwall.
