Rowlett DART Blue Line light rail station groundbreaking March 23

The groundbreaking ceremony for Rowlett’s new DART Blue Line light rail station will be March 23 at 2 pm at the Rowlett Park & Ride facility at 5000 Martin Dr. (just east of Rowlett Rd. and south of Hwy 66).

The nearly five-mile Blue Line rail extension, which will run south of Hwy. 66 from Walnut & First St. in Garland to Main St. in downtown Rowlett, is scheduled to open in December, 2012.

Austin Bridge & Road, the design-builder for the project, is hosting the event with guest presenters and speakers: John E. Harper, Mayor of Rowlett; Jim Andoga, President of Austin Bridge & Road; Gary Thomas, DART President and Executive Director; and Mark Enoch, the Garland and Rowlett DART Board of Directors representative.

“This will be an exciting and historic day for the City of Rowlett,” said Mayor John Harper. “We celebrate and recognize the DART Blue Line extension as precisely the economic engine we need to foster development downtown.”

“With the arrival of light rail, Rowlett will become one of the most attractive destinations for living, working and playing in the region. As the DART Board Chairman said last January when they approved the construction contract, we are ‘ready to roll’ on this monumental endeavor.”

More than 200 residents, city officials, project team members and other key stakeholders have been invited to the commencement of the new station.

Along with the presentations, the design-builder will be re-creating the groundbreaking of the site, allowing the local community and civic officials who advocated for the project to participate in the announcement of the station’s construction.

Austin Bridge & Road started construction on the Blue Line Extension Project in early 2009 and will complete the project in 2012. The $360 million project includes construction of the light rail, five new bridges and the realignment of existing freight rail at three locations.

The area around the future station will also receive a face-lift that includes improvements to Martin Drive and landscaping around the station.

One of the Downtown Rowlett Station’s signature features will be the display of artwork by Dallas artist Viola Delgado. Delgado uses images of movement and bold colors to interpret Rowlett’s commitment to environmental preservation, family and community values. Her paintings for the Rowlett Station will be available to view at the groundbreaking celebration.
