Rockwall High Academic Decathlon team breaks record, wins state championship again

SAN ANTONIO – The defending state champion Rockwall High School Academic Decathlon team broke the state medium-sized high school scoring record and won the State Academic Decathlon Meet for the second year in a row last week for medium-sized high schools.

Team members won a total of 45 medals and brought home $30,800 in scholarship money under the leadership of RISD Advanced Academic Specialist and Academic Decathlon Coach David Gear.

Breaking the Texas medium school scoring record with 50,152.2 points, the back-to-back champions won all three gold medals awarded at the meet, including the Superquiz relay and Superquiz team competition.

“I’m very proud of our coaches and students for repeating as state Academic Decathlon Champions,” said Dr. Mark LeMaster, principal of Rockwall High School. “This accomplishment certainly puts RHS in an elite category academically. Their hard work has paid off.   My congratulations go out to them!”

For the first time, the only four-year old Rockwall-Heath High School Academic Decathlon Team also qualified for state, finishing 18th.

They improved their score 1465.9 points from the regional competition.

“We are proud to have advanced to state in just our fourth year of competition, and proud of the fact that both of the district’s competing schools were able to represent our community,” said Heath Principal Tom Maglisceau.

“Our kids have worked so hard, and having now had the opportunity to participate in the state competition, I know our returning students will have that much more confidence and drive for next year’s competition.”

All members of the Rockwall High School’s squad earned individual medals. They are as follows:

Tricia Divita - Second in Economics, Third in Art, First in Social Science, Second in Language and Literature, Second in Super Quiz, and the First overall honors student.  Tricia won $4,700 in scholarship money.

Ginny Mitchell - First in Speech, First in Essay, First in Economics, First in Art, Third in Social Science, Third in Music, Second in Language and Literature, and first in Super Quiz, and the First overall Scholastic student.  Ginny won $4,700 in scholarship money.

Nick Trujillo - Second in Economics, Second in Mathematics, Third in Art, Third in Social Science, Second in Music, First in Language and Literature, and the First overall Varsity student.  Nick won $4,700 in scholarship money.

Brad Carter - Third in Economics, Second in Art, First in Social Science, Second in Music, First in Language and Literature, First in Super Quiz and the Second overall Varsity student.  Brad won $3,700 in scholarship money.

Paige Davis - First in Economics, Second in Mathematics, Third in Social Science, Second in Music, Second in Super Quiz, and the Second overall scholastic student.  Paige won $3,700 in scholarship money.

Eugene Kim – Third in Economics, Third in Mathematics, Second in Art, Third in Social Science, First in Music, First in Super Quiz, and the Third overall honors student.  Eugene won $2,700 in scholarship money.

Stephen Hendrix - Third in Mathematics, First in Music, First in Language and Literature, and the Third overall scholastic student.  Stephen won $2,700 in scholarship money.

Joseph Haisten - First in Economics, First in Mathematics, First in Art, First in Music, First in Language and Literature, Third in Super Quiz, and the Third overall Varsity student.  Joseph won $2,700 in scholarship money.

Ally Elsey - Third in Interview. Ally won $1,200 in scholarship money.

Rockwall Coaches are David Gear and Michael Oldham.

One member of the Rockwall-Heath High School Team earned one individual medal.

Andrew Meyer – Second in Mathematics and Third in Language and Literature.

Additional members of the RHHS squad were: Cullen Clark, Thomas Bruning, Chase La Rosa, Daniel Carlos, Nick Engmann, Jocelyn Alvarez, Matt Allen and Jeff Folleras.

Heath coaches are Kim Blain and Kathleen Shipmann.
