Helping Hands Board Chairman Bennie Daniels to run for Rockwall City Council

ROCKWALL – Rockwall County Helping Hands Board Chairman and retired Rockwall insurance agent Bennie Daniels has announced his candidacy for Rockwall City Council, Place 3, in the May 14 election.

Place 3 is currently held by two-term Council member Glen Farris, who’s announced he’s vacating his seat to run for Mayor. No other candidates for Place 3 have yet filed, with the deadline approaching March 14 at 5 pm.

If elected, Daniels will become the second Helping Hands leader on the Council. Executive Director Margo Nielsen was appointed to the Council in 2005 and elected in 2006 but must step down next year when her third term expires.

In announcing his candidacy, the 33-year resident of Rockwall stated: “I will bring a dedication of service to the residents of Rockwall, and I pledge to serve with fairness and respect for all and with fiscal responsibility.”

“My government and business ownership background and involvement in local community service organizations have given me broad qualifying experiences to be an effective Rockwall City Council member.”

Daniels opened his own State Farm insurance business in Rockwall in 1985. When he retired in 2006, he was ranked in the top seven percent of all State Farm agents in the nation.

He was previously employed by the Bureau of the Census in Washington, D.C. from 1963 to 1976, and in Dallas until 1985, when he resigned his position as Assistant Regional Director. He received the U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze Medal in 1983 for his contributions to the 1980 Decennial Census.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana Tech University in 1963 with a major study in statistics.

Daniels said serving the residents of Rockwall has always been a priority.

He was elected to the Helping Hands all-volunteer Board of Directors in 2006 and has served without pay as Chairman since 2007.

A charter member of the Rockwall Morning Rotary Club, he previously served on the YMCA Board of Directors as Vice Chairman and as Chairman of the Sustaining Capital Campaign.

Daniels and his wife, Gloria, were one of the seven core families that founded Lake Pointe Church.  They currently attend First Baptist Rockwall, where he serves as a deacon.

They have two adult sons and three grandchildren.
