Former Rockwall GOP Chair, Rowlett Council Member Mary Lou Hawkins dies

Former Rockwall County Republican Chairperson and Rowlett City Council Member Mary Lou Hawkins passed away Feb. 18.

She was 85 years old.

Hawkins served on the Rowlett Planning and Zoning Commission from June, 1984 to April, 1987; and on the City Council from April, 1987 – May, 1989.

She may be most remembered for leading the No Higher Taxes Group campaign against the new Rockwall County Courthouse and other local projects. The group posted a yellow road sign on Goliad in Rockwall for several years to protest increased taxes.

Former associates say she was also a force behind opening up the Rowlett City Council work session meetings to the public, building the Rowlett animal shelter and spearheading curbside recycling.

She is survived by sons and daughter: David Harper of Whitewright, TX; Rick Hawkins of Dallas, TX; John Hawkins of Red Oak, TX; and Missy Wallace of Terrell, TX; plus her sister; Melva Dean Russell of Hurst, TX; and 12 grandchildren.

A memorial gathering was held March 1 for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to The American Heart Association.
