Rockwall girls nearly upset top-ranked Lincoln in basketball playoffs

The Area’s Class 4A Champion Rockwall girls basketball team nearly came from behind to upset top-ranked Dallas Lincoln last night in a UIL Regional Quarter-Finals game at North Mesquite but missed two shots in the final three seconds and lost, 50-47.

Behind at the half, 30-24, behind the shooting of Alyssa Lang and Hannah Hughes, the Lady Jackets twice pulled within a point in the fourth quarter.

With the score 49-47, Hughes shot bounced off the rim. After Lincoln made a free throw, Kayla Smith caught an in-bounds pass near mid-court but her desperation heave fell from the front of the rim.

The game was tight throughout the entire contest. The score was tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Then, after Rockwall took an 18-15 lead on Smith’s 3-point shot in the second quarter, the Lady Tigers (27-3) ran off 11 straight points to take a 30-24 halftime lead, which they never relinquished.

Alyssa Lang led the Lady Jackets with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Hughes was held to just 14. Paige Turner contributed 8, Smith 7 and Mariah Roof 2 points.

The Lady Jackets end their season with a 30-7 record.

Lincoln will move on to play in the UIL Regional Semi-final game.
