Rockwall Helping Hands hosts event to promote women’s heart health

Local cardiologist and women’s heart advocate Dr. Tulika Jain will be the featured speaker at a luncheon hosted by Rockwall Helping Hands Feb. 22 at the Hilton Bella Harbor Hotel in Rockwall to promote better heart health for women.

The luncheon will begin at Noon and tickets are $25 per person.

According to Helping Hands spokeswoman Kay Dutta, more than 200,000 women die each year from heart attacks – five times as many women as breast cancer – per a 2010 report from the American Heart Association Statistics Committee and Stroke Statistics Subcommittee.

“Because a woman’s heart attack symptoms are often different from a man’s, the Health Center of Helping Hands is hosting the luncheon. Wear red and show your support of women’s heart health.”

Helping Hands Executive Director Margo Nielsen said no one has died of cancer in her family but every female member has died of heart disease.

“In my family, no one has died of cancer.  Every female member on both sides of my family has died of heart disease, including my mother and both my grandmothers and both of my aunts, so this is an important issue to me.  April is national Women’s Heart Health month, so it’s time Helping Hands hosts an event designed to educate local women about the dangers and reasons for heart disease.”

To attend the luncheon, contact Dutta at 972-771-4357 or no later than Feb. 17.
