SilverSneakers classes designed to help older adults maintain fitness, build strength

(The Dallas Morning News) As the velvety voice of Frank Sinatra croons from a stereo, a dozen adults seated in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror lift hand weights over their heads.

“Double time!” the instructor urges. Double time is slower than it once was for members of the Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program, an exercise class for adults age 65 and older.

The program is covered by several health insurance plans in Texas, including Medicare. The goal is to keep senior citizens spry and out of the doctor’s office, in turn lowering health care costs.
