Basketball season begins for Rockwall County teams

By J.J. Smith. The 2010-11 basketball season has begun for Rockwall County’s three area public high schools with a variety of wins and losses. Girls teams started earlier and have played more games than boys, thus far.

ROCKWALL:

The Rockwall boys (1-2) opened their season last week with two losses to Terrell (Tuesday night), 59-56, and to Tyler Robert E. Lee (Friday night), 51-33.

They won their first game last night, defeating Royse City, 55-41. Blake Sandlin scored 17 points and Wesley Davis had 14.

They will play in the Royse City TNT tournament Dec. 2-4, and have 11 more games following in 2010 before beginning District 10-4A play vs. Heath, Jan. 4.

The Yellowjackets girls (5-3) opened their season with two victories, squeaking by Plano West Nov. 8, 60-56, and beating Round Rock Stony Point, 42-32, Nov. 11, at the Belton High School Dr. Pepper Chisholm Trail Classic Tournament.

They lost their next two tournament games to Houston Westbury and Harker Heights, 61-40 and 45-42, respectively, followed by a win over Temple, Nov. 13, 60-44.

Last week the Lady Jackets defeated Garland, 44-33, and lost to Mesquite Poteet, 62-52.

Last night they defeated Royse City there, 52-31, behind Alyssa Lang’s 23 points and 16 rebounds. Hannah Hughes added 18 points.

They resume play Nov. 29 at home vs. Carrollton Creekview, and will open District 10-4A play Dec. 10 at Highland Park.

The girls have 18 more games in December.

ROCKWALL-HEATH:

The Hawks boys team (2-1) opened the season last week with a victory at home Tuesday over Carrollton Newman-Smith, 58-32, and a close loss Friday night to Royse City there, 55-52.

Last night they clobbered Forney there, 50-35.

Next game is Nov. 30 at Lake Highlands, followed by the Royse City TNT Tournament, Dec. 2-4.

After 12 more pre-season games, they begin District 10-4A play at home vs. Heath, Jan. 4.

The Lady Hawks (1-6) began the season with three straight losses at West Mesquite, 64-51, at Mesquite Poteet, 59-29, and Denton Ryan, 60-34, at the Allen Lady Hoopfest.

They won their first game of the season at Allen Nov. 18 over San Antonio Alamo Heights, 47-33, but lost two more tourney games to The Colony, 57-31, and to Ennis, 39-35.

Richardson beat the Lady Hawks last night, 44-34, at Heath. April Brown and Aly Coughlin led Heath with eight points apiece.

They next play at the Royse City TNT Tournament, Dec. 2-4, and open District 10-4A play at home Dec. 10 vs. Richardson Pearce.

ROYSE CITY

The Bulldogs boys team (2-1) opened their season at home with wins over Conrad, Nov. 16, 54-50, and Rockwall-Heath, 55-52, last Friday night at the Highland Park Scots Classic Tournament.

They lost their Tourney game last night at Rockwall, 55-41.

Next game is today at 2 pm at home vs. Forney, followed by a game at home Nov. 30 vs. Frisco Liberty as part of the Tournament.

They begin District 13-4A play Dec. 21 at Texarkana Texas High.

The Lady Bulldogs (3-4) opened their season with a victory over Richardson Pearce Nov. 4, 53-44.

They followed up with three losses and one win in the Frisco ISD Tournament, Nov. 11-13, to Bishop Lynch, 55-23, over Lake Dallas, 40-33, to Frisco Heritage, 53-44, and to McKinney Boyd, 54-29.

Last week they beat Cleburne at home, 60-44, and then lost last night at Rockwall, 52-31.

They play next at Rains, Nov. 30 and begin District 13-4A play Dec. 14 at Mt. Pleasant.
