Former Hawk Kendial Lawrence runs 71 yards for TD vs. Texas Tech

By J.J. Smith. Former Heath Hawk football star Kendial Lawrence raced 71 yards down the sideline for a touchdown midway during the first quarter last Saturday in front of 55,000 fans to give Missouri a 14-0 lead over Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders eventually caught up and won 24-17, scoring 21 straight points in the second half in Lubbock.

The 5’9″ 190-lb. sophomore was the Tigers’ leading rusher in the game with 96 yards on just six carries, his best day ever in a college game.

This season he is his team’s third leading ground-gainer, rushing for 280 net yards on 47 carries and three touchdowns for an impressive 6.0 yards per carry. Tiger De’Vion Moore leads runners with 368 net yards on 64 carries.

Lawrence has also caught three passes for 23  yards.

Lawrence made a major impact and was the subject of this story by Len Goldman of the Columbia Missourian. Goldman interviewed Lawrence’s mother, Hortencia, who watched her son’s performance in Lubbock. Here is an excerpt:

“His senior year of high school, he had more than 40 touchdowns, so we’re kind of used to it,” Hortencia Lawrence said.

When she saw Kendial Lawrence had only one man to beat on his long touchdown run, she knew he was gone.

“When he did that cut, I knew they couldn’t catch him,” she said. “I’ve seen that move before.”

Missouri is now 7-2 & 3-2 in the Big 12 Northern Division. They play Kansas State (6-3, 3-3) this Saturday in their last home game of the season.

The Tigers are expected to be invited to play in a bowl game.
