2 interception returns for TDs lead Heath Hawks to victory

By J.J. Smith. Two interception returns for touchdowns, including a 75-yarder by sophomore defensive back Parker Wood with just 2:17 left in the game, enabled the Area’s Class 4A sixth-ranked Rockwall-Heath Hawks to overcome an unusually lackluster offensive showing and defeat the Garland Lakeview Patriots, 31-17, last night at Homer B. Johnson Stadium in Garland.

Junior Mario Henderson also returned a 32-yard interception for a TD just before the first half ended, about a minute after sophomore running back Jeffrey Irokwe had run 27 yards for a touchdown with 1:40 left in the half. Heath (3-0) led 21-10 at halftime.

Wood’s long return broke open what had been a close game. With the score 24-17, and about 3:30 left in the game, Lakeview was moving the ball, hoping for one more tying or go-ahead score. But a terribly high snap from center resulted in about a 20-yard loss, forcing the Patriots into a fourth and about a mile.

With so little time left, Lakeview quarterback Davonte Black launched a long pass that Wood surprisingly came down with and he suddenly broke loose for the long TD, putting the Hawks in command for the final few minutes.

Surprisingly, Lakeview outgained Heath 352 to 167 total yards and had 16 first downs compared to 11 for the Hawks. The Patriots also maintained possession of the ball longer than Heath.

But the Hawks were again opportunistic and made plays when they needed to.

Junior wide receiver Amaris Fields opened the Hawks scoring catching a 10-yard pass from senior quarterback Ross Hudson in the second quarter. Fields caught three passes for 52 yards. Hudson completed four of eight passes for 64 yards with no interceptions.

In the fourth quarter, senior kicker Trevor Pinkston nailed a 35-yard field goal, which increased the Hawks lead from 21-17 to 24-17. He  also converted on 4-4 PATs.

Irokwe led Hawk rushers with 73 yards on 12 carries. Junior Javon Hernandez rushed for 60 yards on 11 carries. Junior Dorian Lawry did not play for the second game in a row for unknown reasons.

Black led Lakeview rushing for 118 yards on 16 carries and passing for 152 yards on 9 of 18 passes for 2 TDs, along with his 2 interceptions.

Jarvis Baxter caught seven passes for 104 yards and one TD.

Heath takes a week off next week and will play its first district game Sept. 24 at home vs. highly-touted Richardson Pearce.
