County June unemployment rate highest since 2000

By J.J. Smith. The unemployment rate plus number of people filing for unemployment in June were the highest recorded statistics in Rockwall County since the turn of the century.

According to a report recently released by the Texas Workforce Commission, Rockwall County reported a 7.9 percent unemployment rate, compared to 7.5 percent in May and 7.8 percent rate in June, 2009.

There were 3,120 people listed as unemployed in the County – 173 more than in May, and 124 more than in June of last year.

The County’s civilian labor force added 920 people during the past 12 months.

There were 36,412 people reported as employed last month, representing an increase of 796 jobs when compared to June one year ago.

Rockwall County is listed by the Commission as part of the Dallas-Plano-Irving Metropolitan Division, which includes Dallas, Collin, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.

Kaufman County recorded the area’s highest unemployment rate last month, at 9.5 percent.

Hunt County reported 9.1 percent unemployment and Dallas County was listed at 9 percent.

Denton County recorded the division’s lowest unemployment rate last month, at 7.6 percent.

Collin County reported 7.9 percent.
