Rockwall-Heath wins 38th straight, beats Cleburne, 4-1

By J.J. Smith. The nation’s top-ranked, undefeated Rockwall-Heath Hawks baseball team took advantage of two Cleburne errors last night and won their 38th straight game, 4-1, in the first of their best-of-3-game Class 4A Region II semifinal series at Cleburne.

All of the Hawks’ runs came in the fourth inning.

After Jovan Hernandez cracked an RBI double, he scored when Cleburne (29-11) was unable to catch Drew Benefield’s pop fly. Moments later, Drew Baxter smashed a two-run triple which drove in two more runs.

That was enough for winning pitcher James Baune (photo by In Focus Photography), who pitched a complete game and didn’t give up a run until the seventh inning.

“I just let my defense do the work,” said the star pitcher.

“We were fortunate to take advantage of a couple of their mistakes,” said Rockwall-Heath coach Greg Harvey. “But that kind of stuff happens.”

The second game of their series will be in Cleburne at 2 pm this Saturday. If a third game is necessary, it will start 30 minutes later.
