Top-ranked Rockwall-Heath advances to regional semis, shuts out Newman Smith, 6-0

James Baune (pictured above, courtesy of In Focus Photography) struck out seven in 5 1/3 shutout innings, Trevor Holland went 2-for-3 with two RBI doubles and Jovan Hernandez smacked a two-run homer as undefeated Rockwall-Heath won its 37th straight game last night, shutting out Carrollton Newman Smith in a one-game playoff in the Class 4A Region II quarterfinals, 6-0.
Ranked No. 1 nationally by USA Today, the Hawks (37-0) beat its District 10-4A rivals for the third time this season before an overflow crowd at Carrollton’s Kelly Field, advancing to the regional semifinals for the second straight year.
Rockwall-Heath lost in last year’s regional semifinal to eventual 4A state champion Texarkana Texas.
The Hawks next opponent will not be known until this weekend’s playoff action is completed.
