Rockwall man killed, four injured in 3-vehicle hit and run crash

By J.J. Smith. A Rockwall man was killed and four family members were injured in a three-vehicle crash May 5 caused by a hit-and-run driver on State Highway 276.

Kenton William Klutts, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, at the intersection of Hwy. 276 and Sunny Circle, near where he resided. Sunny Circle is just west of Southern Junction night club at FM 551.

The injured were two adults and two children whose names are not yet known. They were riding in a Dodge minivan.

According to Lt. David Davis of  the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office, they were all were treated and released with the exception of the driver, who suffered a broken leg.

The accident occurred at about 11:35 am, as the deceased was driving eastbound in a Toyota Yaris and slowed to make a turn north onto Sunny Circle. His car was then struck from behind and forced into oncoming westbound traffic by the hit-and-run driver of a Ford 150 pickup.  The Toyota and minivan then struck head-on.

Lt. Davis said that law enforcement authorities are searching for the driver of the truck who fled the scene and was last observed heading eastbound on Highway 276. He was described as a white or Hispanic male wearing a light-colored cowboy hat.

“He didn’t slow down,” Lt. Davis said. “There was no evidence of braking. We are looking for help in locating the Ford pickup.”

The suspect’s vehicle was described as being a black 2004 to 2008 Ford F-150 pickup, with possible grille guard and definite frontal damage.

The truck will have damage along the left side, as well, particularly the driver’s door, and is also missing the  left tail light assembly. There is probably red transfer paint from the Toyota, Lt. Davis said.

The pickup has Mazzi custom wheels, Sphinx 790 model, with at least one missing center cap.

Any one with information about the vehicle or driver is asked to contact the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office at 972-204-7001.

A lifetime resident of Rockwall, TX, Mr. Klutts was a member of La Prada Drive Church of Christ, where he volunteered to transport the elderly members to and from church, according to his obituary.

Funeral services were held today with interment at Rest Haven Cemetery.
