By J.J. Smith (InFocus Photography). USA TODAY’S top-ranked high school baseball team in the nation, the Rockwall-Heath Hawks, won their first Bi-District playoff game and 33rd straight victory last night, beating Frisco Centennial in Frisco, 9-2.

Behind the pitching of James Baune (pictured above) – who is the Area 4A pitching leader with a regular season record of 9-0 and incredible 0.67 ERA – and with home runs by Trevor Holland, Jovan Hernandez and Jake Thompson, the Hawks had just seven hits but made them all count.

Frisco Centennial (22-12, 8-6) also had seven hits, including a home run by Alex Chivian.

Both teams made one error.

Hernandez is the Area 4A regular season hits, home run and RBI leader with 54 hits, nine round-trippers and 49 runs batted in. He’s also the third leading hitter with a .524 batting average, just behind leader Austin Krajnak of Little Elm at .577 and Matt Dean of The Colony at .557.

Holland has the sixth leading hitter in Area 4A with .505 average, with 46 hits and 29 RBIs.

Thompson leads the league with 108 at-bats, plus has 47 hits and a .435 batting average, with 5 homers and 41 RBIs. He’s also ranks second in pitching in Area 4A with a sparkling 7-0 record and 0.739 ERA.

Rockwall-Heathwill win the best-of-three series with a victory in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. game at home.

District 9-4A champion McKinney took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three Bi-District playoff series by defeating the Rockwall Yellowjackets at Hebron, 10-0.

The teams will meet there again Friday at 7:30 p.m. for Game 2. Josh Deloach’s double was the only extra-base hit against Lions pro prospect Matt Lipka.
