Run-off election today will settle primary races

By J.J. Smith. Three County Republican primary elections will be finally settled today, when voters return to the polls one more time. Since no Democrats are registered or campaigning for the positions, the winners will take office beginning in January.

In the Rockwall County Judge race, retired US Army officer and former IBM and MCI executive Jerry Hogan is running against American National Bank Vice President Kevin Fowler.

Hogan was the top vote-getter in the March 2 primary election with 2,845 votes (33.1%), followed by Fowler with 2,279 votes (26.5%).

In the Justice of the Peace Precincts 1 & 4 race, incumbent David Karr is running against Garland assistant fire chief Jack James.

Judge Karr gained 1,714 votes on March 2 (42%), compared to 1,432 votes for James (35.1%).

In the Justice of the Peace Precincts 2 & 3 race, incumbent Larry Holloway faces community volunteer and writer Nancy Beaty, who lost four years ago to Holloway in the run-off after receiving the most votes on the first election date.

On March 2, Judge Holloway received 1,549 votes (38.1%) compared with 1,377 votes (33.9%) for Beaty.

The polls opened at 7 am and will close at 7 pm.
