RISD Deputy Superintendent Bailey named lone finalist to replace Burton

By J.J. Smith. Deputy Superintendent Jeff Bailey has been named by the Rockwall ISD Trustees as the lone finalist to succeed Superintendent Dr. Gene Burton, who announced last month that he is retiring at the end of the current school year.

Bailey was hired by RISD in April, 2009, when he was Deputy Superintendent of the Plano ISD after serving in that school district for 30 years.

“It’s truly an honor to be chosen as the lone finalist,” Bailey said. “I’m very excited about this opportunity to lead the district to be one of the best in the state and the nation.”

“I’m very pleased with the choice of the board in Mr. Bailey,” said Burton. “We’re very fortunate to get someone with his experience and skill sets.”

Bailey became deputy superintendent for Plano ISD in 2007, overseeing the day-to-day operations of 68 campuses, and administrative management of departments such as human resources, student and family services, security and athletics.

Bailey began his educational career as a teacher and coach in Plano ISD in 1979. Subsequently, he served the district as an assistant principal, personnel director and principal. As area assistant superintendent for the East Cluster from 1997-2007, his responsibilities included the instructional and operational management of 27 campuses in the fastest growing region of the Plano district.

Mr. Bailey holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and a Master of Science in Educational Administration, both from East Texas State University.
