By J.J. Smith. State Senator Bob Deuell (R-Greenville) filed official paperwork Thursday in Austin with the Republican Party of Texas and will be a candidate for re-election in 2010.

First elected in 2002, Sen. Deuell will be seeking a third full term in the Texas Senate. He currently serves as Vice-Chair to both the Senate State Affairs Committee and the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services.

He is also a board-certified family practice physician who has owned and operated Primary Care Associates of Greenville since 1990. He serves as an instructor for medical students and residents for various medical schools and residencies in the state.

“I have filed the necessary papers and am officially seeking re-election,” Deuell said. “I’m proud of my record and proud of the support that I have had during my time in the Senate.”

“I look forward to seeing everyone on the campaign trail in the next few months.”

In addition to filing, the Deuell campaign also announced it had secured the official endorsement of the following Republican County Chairs in Senate District Two:

  • Rockwall County – Chairman Bill Broderick
  • Dallas County – Chairman Jonathan Neerman
  • Rains County – Chairman Rusty Basham
  • Delta County – Chairman Derrell London
  • Hunt County – Chairman David Hale
  • Kaufman County – Chairman Bill Baker
  • Fannin County – Chairman Joe Ward

According to a news release, during his four legislative sessions the Senator has passed over 175 pieces of legislation dealing with many major issues in Texas.

One of his most notable pieces of legislation was the landmark “Jessica’s Law,” which contained some of the strongest punishments in the country for child predators.

Other bills have included measures to reduce property taxes, bring about greater efficiencies in state government, strengthen DWI laws and promote economic development.

Known by many as a leader on conservative issues, Senator Deuell has a 100% pro-life rating from Texas Right To Life and is A+ rated by the National Rifle Association. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Conservative Coalition Research Institute.

A continuous member of the Senate Finance Committee since 2004, he said he has worked hard for sound, conservative fiscal policy.

“As a result of this fiscal discipline, the Texas Senate again passed a balanced budget in 2009 while giving a tax cut to our small businesses.”

During his legislative career, Deuell has been honored with many awards and recognitions for his service.

They include the “Crime Fighter of the Year” award by the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, “Outstanding Senator” by the Texas State Association of Fire Fighters, and the “Patient Advocacy Award” from the Texas Academy of Family Physicians and one of “Texas Medicine’s Best” by the Texas Medical Association.

He was named one of Texas’ Ten Best Legislators by Texas Monthly Magazine in 2007 and in 2009.

Sen. Deuell is also an accomplished musician. Before entering medical school in the late 1970s at the Medical College of Virginia, Deuell enjoyed a career as a professional drummer, playing behind such artists as Ike & Tina Turner and Bob Hope. He sat in with the veteran Western Swing band Asleep at the Wheel at an inaugural ball for George W. Bush in January 2005. He still plays the drums whenever asked for charitable events.

He and his wife, Marilyn, have been married for 39 years. They have three grown children with college degrees.
