Rockwall-Heath beats winless Turner, 51-6; setting up championship showdown with Highland Park

Drew Baxter scored three touchdowns, on a 92-yard fumble recovery plus two and one yard runs, leading Rockwall-Heath to a 51-6 victory over winless Carrollton Turner Thursday night at Rockwall’s Wilkerson-Sanders stadium.

The victory sets up the season-long anticipated showdown between the defending District 10-4A champion Hawks (7-2, 5-1) and pre-season 10-4A favorite Highland Park (7-1, 5-0), Nov. 6, at Rockwall.

In the victory over Turner, four other players scored touchdowns as the Hawks spread the offense around to several new names.

After quarterback Kevin Rodgers threw a 31-yard TD pass to Ryan Peterson and Dorian Lawry scored on a 14-yard run, Baxter then tallied his first TD of the year with a short plunge.

On the Hawks’ next drive, Sebastian Curry-McGill scored on a 12-yard run, for his first TD of the year. Then Armando Villa scored his first by running in a 21-yard blocked punt return to give the Hawks a 35-0 halftime lead.

Heath coasted during the second half, but scored two more TDs on Baxter’s long fumble return, plus his one-yard plunge.

Heath closed out their scoring with a two-point safety, when Turner’s quarterback Pedro Galvan stepped out of the end zone.

Turner’s only score came in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard return of an interception thrown by Hawks backup quarterback Ross Hudson, who also completed three of eight passes for 10 yards.

Hawk quarterback Rodgers completed 8 of 11 passes for 145 yards to four different receivers. Clark Pope, Cameron Wilson and Blaine Snider each caught three passes, and Peterson caught two.

Leading Hawks rushers were Jesse Irokwe with four carries for 39 yards and Curry-McGill with seven carries for 30 yards.
