Rockwall-Heath clinches playoff berth, rallies with fourth-quarter TD to beat Pearce, 27-24

RICHARDSON - Down 24-20 in the fourth quarter in a game with serious playoff implications, Rockwall-Heath’s Kevin Rodgers completed a 15-yard pass to Cameron Wilson and Trevor Wilson kicked the PAT as the Hawks rallied to beat Richardson Pearce 27-24 last night at Richardson’s Eagle-Mustang stadium and clinch a playoff berth.

Behind the almost perfect passing of Rodgers, who completed 16 or 20 passes for 250 yards, two TDs and no interceptions; plus the running of Dorian Lawry, who gained 167 yards on 31 carries and two TDs; the Hawks rallied from a 17-14 halftime deficit.

With Jesse Irokwe’s additional 78 yards on 11 carries and 38 yards rushing by Rodgers on 10 carries, the Hawks high-powered offense accumulated 544 yards total offense.

Wilson led Hawk receivers with 6 catches for 47 yards, Ryan Peterson caught five for 83 yards and Tyler Harding grabbed three for 37 yards.

The big pass play was a 65-yard catch and run by Clark Pope who scored Heath’s third-quarter TD and another 22-yard pass.

Pearce also passed the ball well, as Caleb Lewis completed 29 of 39 passes for 357 yards. But the Hawks defense intercepted two of his passes and limited Pearce’s running game to just 89 yards on 21 carries.

The victory improves the defending champion Hawks district 10-4A record to 4-1, and total record of 6-2. With a victory over winless Turner next week, Heath would then face pre-season favorite and former perennial District 10-4A champion Highland Park at Scots stadium Nov. 6 for the district championship.

Highland Park (5-0, 7-1) stayed undefeated in District 10-4A play last night by destroying Royse City 51-13. Whether the Scots get by Rockwall (2-2, 4-3) next week or not, they will still play Heath for the championship with either one or no losses.

Greenville trampled Carrollton Turner, 42-16, in other District 10-4a action last night.
