Rowlett grandmother pleads guilty to selling ‘cheese’ heroin

By J.J. Smith. A Rowlett grandmother arrested for selling cheese heroin out of her home in Rowlett last February pled guilty Tuesday in a Dallas federal court to a federal charge of drug possession with intent to distribute.

Barbara Blanton Sims, 60, could be sentenced to 40 years in prison and fined $2 million. Her sentencing is scheduled Dec. 28.

The grandmother had no comment after entering her plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Stickney in Dallas. Her attorney, Sally Goodman, also declined to comment.

Last February 11, following a tip, Rowlett police, Dallas County constables and the Drug Enforcement Agency arrested her at her home in the 6500 block of Fairfield Drive, across the street from a Rowlett city park where children play which is considered a “drug-free zone.”

They found and confiscated 3,343 capsules of what appeared to be “cheese” heroin, with a street value of $33,450, nine ounces of Mexican black tar heroin worth $25,250, 16 grams of cheese heroin valued at $2,286, two assault rifles, a semi-automatic machine pistol, and more than $1,000 in counterfeit U.S. currency.

Detectives said it was the largest heroin bust in Rowlett history and they believed the cheese heroin mixture was probably manufactured in her home to be sold in Dallas.

Over 30 teens have died from using cheese heroin since it was first reported in 2005, including Rockwall teen Paige Elliot.

Federal prosecutors are currently seeking to seize Sims’ house and four cars – a Mercedes-Benz, a Jaguar, a Cadillac Escalade and a Rolls-Royce.

Her daughter and granddaughter live in the home but have not been charged.
