Rockwall-Heath holds on, beats Hillcrest Friday night, 10-7

DALLAS – It was a night of mistakes for both teams but Rockwall-Heath’s Ryan Peterson caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Rodgers in the second quarter and Trevor Pinkston kicked the PAT, plus a 33-yard field goal in the third quarter, as Rockwall-Heath (2-1) held on for a 10-6 win over Hillcrest (0-3) at Franklin Stadium Friday night.

Despite fumbling an outrageous eight times and losing four, the Hawks defense completely shut down Hillcrest to a minus 15 yards rushing on just 15 attempts, plus 289 yards passing. They also intercepted three Hillcrest passes to eek out the victory. Hillcrest fumbled twice but recoved both.

Hillcrest’s only score came in the second quarter when Anterrie Maxey caught a nine-yard pass from Deandre Woods, who completed 14 of 28 passes for 286 yards and two interceptions.

The Hawks held a 7-6 halftime lead.

The Hawks managed to gain 202 yards rushing and 214 passing on Rodgers 20 of 37 completions, with one interception. Darius Lawry led the way with 101 yards on 14 carries and Jesse Irokwe ran nine times for 47 yards.

Peterson caught five passes for 72 yards, Cameron Wilson grabbed six for 46 yards and caught 4 for 43 yards. Clark Pope and Amaris Fields each snagged two passes for 29 and and 17 yards, respectively. Lawry caught one seven- yard pass.

In other action involving District teams this week, Richardson Pearce (2-1) blasted Richardson 43-21 Thursday night and Royse City (0-3) lost to Mt. Pleasant 36-17 Friday night.

The Hawks begin District 10-4A action next Friday, Sept. 25, at home vs. undefeated Greenville (3-0). Royse City will also host Rockwall in their District openers Friday night.
