Royse City loses opener to Atlanta, 27-26, when two point conversion run fails

A two-yard run for a two-point conversion was stopped short by Atlanta’s defense after Royse City’s Ryan Fedric’s six-yard TD run and the Bulldogs lost their first game of the season in a hard-fought game Friday night, 27-26, in Atlanta.

With the score tied at 20-20 in the fourth quarter, Atlanta’s quarterback  Carlos Ibarra connected on a 31-yard scoring strike to Orlando Ivory and Ibarra kicked the point after, giving Atlanta a 27-20 lead.

Royse City came roaring back with Fedric’s score but decided to go for the win and failed.

Royse City did outgain Atlanta, with 288 rushing and 134 passing yards, for a total of 422 yards. Atlanta gained 159 yards rushing and 144 passing for a total of 403 total yards. 

Running back Lewis Mapps led the Bulldogs rushing attack with 131 yards on 22 carries. Fedric rushed six times for 72 yards.

New Bulldog quarterback Taylor Corbin completed 12 of 20 passes for 134 yards, but had two interceptions. Fedric was the leading receiver with 8 catches for 61 yards. Logan Mayfield caught four passes for 28 yards, and Marvin Lazalde snagged three for 18 yards. 

Royse City also lost a fumble.

Corion Webster led Atlanta rushers with 95 yards on eight carries.

Ibarra completed nine of 20 passes for 144 yards and no interceptions and rushed for 26 yards on four carries.

Royse City will open their home season Sept. 11 vs. Frisco Wakeland at 7:30 pm.
